After-School Creative Writing Enrichment Program
After-School Creative Writing Enrichment Program
Our Mission
Our goal is to provide middle schoolers with the understanding and confidence to maintain a creative writing practice throughout their high school years and beyond.
Why Creative Writing?
A daily habit of writing fiction builds critical thinking, autonomy, and focus—skills that pay off in high school, college, and life. It also gives students a stable, creative outlet during the fast‑changing middle‑school years.
What Students Gain
Cognitive boost – stronger memory, richer vocabulary, sharper problem‑solving.
Emotional growth – increased empathy, safe self‑expression, resilience through revision.
Academic edge – better reading comprehension, cross‑subject research skills, stronger essay performance.
Practical habits – time‑management, digital‑literacy, a writing portfolio for future applications.
Creative spark – ideas that feed art, music, drama, and original storytelling.
How the Program Runs
The class runs five times a week in the evenings and consists of two main sections: reading/research and writing.
For the reading and research portion, students will choose a book, read at their own speed, jot short notes on flash‑cards. The notes will be minimal and will not be graded.
For the writing portion, students will draft a brief daily segment of a longer story based on their reading or imagination. There will be a low word‑count goal, with no grades or judgment. This goal will develop the habit of consistency and discipline.
We will explore different genres over the course of the school year, from fantasy, historical fiction, comedy, suspense, adventure, romance, creative nonfiction, and many others.
Our focus is developing the habit of writing, not the final product. That being said, students will likely create a novel or novella if they stick with the class.
